60 years ago in order to book a room you had to show up at a hotel, speak to the clerk, find out if any rooms were available, and hope that the rooms met your needs. Once the telephone found it’s way into hotels, booking over the telephone was the next logical step. Although convenient, prices were normally fixed, and still, in order to see the room you either had to have a brochure or a very good imagination. Fast forward to the late 1990’s and online booking was becoming the norm.
Today we are able to use many different online services to help meet our booking needs. We can view photos, videos, see 360 degree panoramic views of the rooms and hotel to see whether this is the hotel that is right for you. Best of all, we can browse prices. Because as we all know, some websites will have a hotel cheaper than others, depending on the date and time.
The three main websites I personally use to find cheap hotels are CAA, Redtag, and RatesToGo, you’ll have to google those as I’m limited in how many links can be put up on EzineArticles. Sometimes when you’re on the road, coming across an internet connection can be tough. There are two ways I find work best to get a cheaper booking. The Lobby Way, and the Phone way.
The Lobby Way
First, the most risky, is using the hotel’s lobby computer to make the booking, then taking the booking number to the desk. Some hotel clerks aren’t a huge fan of this, but it usually works. If you tell them you already have a booking you should be able to quickly use their lobby computer to hop online and make a booking real quick. This way works particularly well if you don’t have access to the internet while traveling, or if you don’t posess a phone.
The Phone Way
Most phones now-a-days have internet access. If you have a decent data plan with your cell phone, you should be able to access those same websites with your phone and make the booking with just as much ease as you would with a regular computer. Be careful though, if you don’t have a decent data plan, all of the potential savings you can make by booking online could be lost to your cell phone provider.
Be sure to check as many hotel booking websites as you can. Go through CAA, RedTag, and RatesToGo, if the hotel is cheap on one site, check another, it could be cheaper there. Extra savings can sometimes be made by booking the room for more than one night. So play around online, save yourself some money!
